SMP #027 – 2018 Look Back and 2019 Look Forward

We started the Safety Matters Show towards the end of August 2018 and this is really the first chance I have had in looking back at where we are right now and I am amazed at what has been achieved.

However, none of this would have been possible without you, the listeners and watchers who regularly tune in and support what we are doing…thank you.

As a run-up to the New year, in this episode, I look back over the last 4 months and how we have developed. What we have done and what are the plans for 2019 based upon our audience interactions.

We are merely a reflection driven by the audience demand and participation.  If you want us to do something specific, please let us know. We can but improve.

We had a question from one of our listeners asking us to describe the colour coding we use for our shows and why..? As the show grows, we want to make sure that you can access information readily and easily. After all, we are all about “performance improvement” and “development”. In this minicast, I provide a quick overview of the colours and the logic.

Let’s declutter some aspects around motivation because it can lead to “demotivation”. There is also an accompanying (FREE) download below that you can use to apply the “Depro-Repro” approach. Depro-Repro is basically your “DIY” approach for “Deprogramming” and “Reprogramming”.  Hope you enjoy the podcast and if there is anything I can do to help…let me know. SMP #020 – What exactly is Health and Well-being?

What exactly is Health and Well-being?

sonnigopal We often hear the words Health and Well-being. Perhaps,  someone might ask you the question “How’s your health” but do they ever ask you “how’s your well-being”? Probably not.   In this podcast, I start with some standard definitions for health and well-being. I then do a deeper dive by reflecting on my own personal circumstances and job-related experiences. It can be a very difficult subject to disseminate because of the “human dynamic”, however, if I reflect, recall and share my own experience it might give you that additional perspective, that “Eureka” moment and allow you to tackle those demons that I had to wrestle and defeat. As always, hope you enjoy the show and if not, please do let me know.

SMP #019 – How To Boost Your Motivation For Fitness

How To Boost Your Motivation For Fitness

Sukhleen GopalIn this show, Sukhleen and I discuss how to motivate your fitness aspirations. As a qualified personal trainer, I offer my top tips based upon the SMART approach and how to be realistic with the targets that you set to ensure you don’t “burn out” and/or become demotivated. It’s just straight-forward “apple pie” stuff and nothing with regard to magic bullets that make you invincible or give you an overnight 6-pack…sorry. It just takes a little bit of hard work and most importantly commitment. Let’s know what we can do regarding future topics and also drop us an email if you have any questions. Hope you enjoy the show. Links for “stuff” we mentioned in the podcast:

Top 5 Tips For Organisations To Take Well-Being Beyond The Fruit Bowl

Dr Carolyn Yeoman In this podcast with Carolyn, we discuss how Organisations can address and improve well-being at work to take it “beyond the fruit bowl”.  But, what does that mean? Carolyn and I put forward 5 tips that can be easily incorporated within the existing management systems framework (based upon the Plan-Do-Check-Act approach).  There is nothing fancy here but really practical advice based upon expertise but more importantly, an approach that is sustainable and not just a “monthly bonus approach ” nor “flavour of the month”. SMP #017 – Diversity and Well-being Interview With Heather Beach

Diversity and Well-being Interview With Heather Beach

Heather Beach on Safety Matters Podcast  I enjoyed this podcast with Heather where we explored diversity and well-being. We speak candidly about our experiences in the working environment and also how things have evolved, for the better, albeit with some challenges. Somewhat nostalgic for me and very enjoyable. A really open discussion in that we spoke freely about our own experiences regarding bullying, not just in the workplace but also on a personal level. Workplace bullying is a big concern going forward for many employers and I was fortunate in tempting Heather to come back and do a Podcast in the near future. Watch this space… Heather Beach’s Profile on LinkedIn

SMP #016 – SMP’s New Co-Host (Plus Sonni Gets A Grilling, For a Change)

SMP’s New Co-Host (Plus Sonni Gets A Grilling, For a Change)

Sukhleen GopalI am really pleased to introduce the newest member to the Safety Matters Podcast, Sukhleen Gopal (my daughter). Sukhleen and I start to discuss her background and then (as she does), the tables are quickly turned and I get the “grilling”. Whilst I have already (at the beginning) produced a podcast on why etc., it was great to have an opportunity to explain in more detail why I started the Safety Matters Podcast because I had the chance dive into my background and experiences. Sukhleen is passionate about being a “positive change catalyst” and her background in Human Psychology, Dynamics, Counselling plus Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will greatly enhance the show with respect to “Safety, Health and Well-being”. A great big warm welcome to Sukhleen and here’s to some terrific future shows.

SMP #014 – How to promote equality and diversity in your workplace

How to promote equality and diversity in your workplace

sonnigopalIt is important to ensure that fairness is paramount when it comes to equality and diversity. Having a fair approach generates a highly productive working environment. After all, it’s difficult to work effectively when an individual is under stress, duress or feelings of insecurity. In this podcast, I start with defining equality and diversity and discuss how one can set about improving these two important aspects within a work environment.

SMP #013 – Richard Hawk Interview – Let’s Make Safety Fun

Richard Hawk Interview – Let’s Make Safety Fun

That word “FUN”- Around 10 years ago, Safety and FUN were 2 words you would not see “joined up”. “YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT SERIOUSLY AROUND HERE” That’s what we most likely heard..why are things different now? In this Safety Matters Podcast (SMP), I interview Richard Hawk and discuss how we can make safety fun.  How we can use fun and laughter, within reason, to diffuse tense situations, meetings and also how we can deploy fun as “learning” tool. Enjoy this podcast with a very articulate and seasoned professional such as Richard. Richard Hawk’s LinkedIn Profile

SMP #012 – Introduction to the “Safety Continuum”…what is it?

Introduction to the “Safety Continuum”…what is it?

sonnigopal“People are at the centre of everything that we do”… In the world of “safety”, there are 4 distinctive areas of interaction within the “Safety Continuum“. The “Safety Continuum” comprises:

DESIGN:  We have to start somewhere and in the design stage, “people” are involved in “brainstorming”, reviewing concepts, ideas, doing design risk assessments, reviews etc. ENGINEERING: With the design stage done, “people” are involved with putting it all together with engineering packages that allow building, construction, fabrication etc. PROCEDURES: But we can’t really do things without instruction, procedures and manuals.  Guess who writes them…”People”. PEOPLE: No Design, Engineering or Procedures can happen unless people are involving other people i.e., “teamwork”. This brings additional challenges such as human dynamics, stress, well-being etc.

SMP #007 – Mark LaCour Interview – Safety And The Role Of Big Data

Mark LaCour Interview – Safety And The Role Of Big Data

Mark is a true giant in the field of “digital media networking” and safety. If anyone can talk about safety and the role of big data with confidence, expertise and experiences…it will be Mark. I did an article about Cambridge Analytica and the “devil was in the detail”. It was quite opportune that with Mark, we were able to open up a discussion on how digital media is transforming the way we live and manage things in the world right now. In this Podcast, we discuss some of the challenges that we face, how digital media will play an increasing role going forward and also what Safety practitioners should (or must) do to stay ahead.  For sure, there will be many more podcasts with Mark, especially as he has such an engaging voice to listen to.
